New Brighton Pier & Library.

On 1 November 1997 the new pier was officially opened, the culmination of more than 30 years work by the Pier and Foreshore Society. It raised almost $2 million from the community which was matched by a further $2 million from the Christchurch City Council

The original New Brighton Pier, built in 1894, stood on the same site as the present pier. When the original pier was threatened with demolition in 1963 a group of residents, formed the Pier and Foreshore Society to try to save it. However, it was unsuccessful and the pier was demolished in 1964.

Designer: Andrew Barclay.Warren & Mahoney
Length: 300 metres
Height: 7 metres above high tide
Width: 6 metres
Deck: 900mm thick pre-stressed concrete
Piles: 17 piles, 1.4 metres diameter, 20 metres apart

Millenium Tower, Tokyo, Japan

This building, almost twice the height of Sears, would have a resident population of 50,000. It is estimated that this tower would cost 10billion to build and have an impressive floor area of 1,039,206m squared. The tower was the victim of the bursting of the real-estate bubble in Japan, but Foster maintains that he still hopes to build a version of this building. An unpublished variant of this design, conceived for a Shanghai site with Donald Trump, was called the M Tower. Unlike the Millenium tower with it's central core, the M Tower would have a hollow centre, allowing sunlight to penetrate from one side to the other. Working with the Obayashi Corporation, the clients, they were able to demonstrate that the Tower would be able to be self-sufficient and even process it's own waste. Architects: Sir Norman Foster, Foster Associates.

The Shard London, UK

The Shard London Bridge — formerly known as London Bridge Tower and Shard of Glass — is a proposed skyscraper designed by Renzo Piano for a site in London, on the Southwark side of London Bridge, next to London Bridge station at 32 London Bridge Street. It would replace a twenty-four storey building, Southwark Towers, which was completed in 1976. The tower will be 1004 feet tall and have 66 floors. It was granted planning permission in November 2003.

Before the bridge was constructed, traffic had to descend into the Tarn River valley and pass along the route nationale N9 near the town of Millau, causing heavy congestion at the beginning and end of the July and August vacation season. The bridge now traverses the Tarn valley above its lowest point, linking the causse du Larzac to the causse rouge, and is inside the perimeter of the Grands Causses regional natural park.
