Thanks to everyone for the support and wishes since the devastating Feb.22 Earthquake here in Christchurch, NZ. We were lucky in that the ZNO crew were uninjured, our house is solid and we have been able to quickly setup and get back top work .. many friends and family were'nt so fortunate and our love and support continues to go to them .. Kia Kaha!

Our beautiful city has been torn apart ..

We're getting busy again working on visions to rebuild our city and assisting HITLabNZ with the EarthquakeAR app that will allow us to see that which we have lost but also project forward visions of our city .. stay tuned!

Christchurch is the first New Zealand city to be added to EveryScape’s directory and the first worldwide city to be launched within EveryScape’s new high resolution viewer. The new viewer includes a full-screen option and zoom functionality, which creates a fully immersive user experience, allowing users to explore Christchurch streets and businesses as though they were there in person.

With today’s Phase I launch, web surfers will be able to explore Christchurch main streets and a limited number of businesses. Phase II is ongoing and will include the addition of other Christchurch businesses as well as public content from other major New Zealand and Australasian cities.

Google released another Imagery update last night .. Christchurch and Wellington have received new Hi-res imagery .. you can now make out people, cars, wheely bins etc.

We have projected a sun study on the imagery using Google SketchUp, and found the imagery was taken around 2.45PM March 4, 2009 .. where were you??

We've been working with the crew at Pivnice Architecture on the use of Augmented reality via the SketchUp AR plug-in that now works on the MAC. The video above by BIG is the best we've seen to date .. even if we don't know what he's on about. The video below shows the AR-Media plugin for Sketchup .. you'll see the ZNO Burj Al Arab model used in the demo, we did this way back in '05.

Google Ocean & 3D Models

Last week Google released version5 of Google Earth with many new features .. including Google Ocean! .. and yes .. we can add 3D models under the ocean.

We have modeled the HMNZS TUI which has been sunk off the coast of Northland NZ, as an artificial reef and dive attraction.

We have several other under-sea models in production, including Diving guides and drive-able submarines. If you have any undersea projects we can assist with, contact us by email.

Breaking news!! ... Finally today NZ receives GOOGLE streetview. We've had a quick look around and they seem to have covered Christchurch, Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Queenstown, Nelson, Napier and Hamilton ... more later.

UPDATE: we've found some time to have a good look around and the coverage is quite impressive .. most of the country is covered. Streetview is also available in Google Earth which seemed an easier way to navigate around.

ZNO at world's most southern Pecha Kucha.

Jason Mill of ZNO was asked to speak at the inaugural Christchurch NZ Pecha Kucha, being the most southern in the world.

He showcased work that has seen him listed amongst the "most innovative and influential designers in the world".

Despite the freezing outside temperatures there was a fantastic crowd on a night that rocked! cheers to the organizers!

Fly into Australia and check out the fantastic model set developed by the Royal Australian Institue of Architects for Google Earth. It features both a KML file of all award winning architecture of the last 6 years (over 500 locations) and 60 3D models of thier National Award winners from the last 6 years. Google's announcement here. and here.

The 3D models have hit the 3D Buildings default, and the KML's should shortly appear in a feature layer.

We were lucky to attend the launch at their CVO8 annual conference in Sydney .. here's a movie of the launch at their opening party ...

NZ Terrain now Hi-Def

Slightly old news now .. but earlier this month Google Earth updated the terrain model for NZ. You can now visit much of NZ's stunning scenery in +-10m terrain accuracy.

Just fly into Christchurch and make sure the 3D BUILDINGS box is checked in the layers.

We will be adding a similar amount of buildings every month, so watch the garden city grow.

Here's a KMZ DOWNLOAD of my first MountainBike ride thru our local plantation. The N95 picked up the entire route, even thru dense trees. (our GARMIN C60 cannot) The kml shows your average speed as a 3D wall which is very cool .. 100km/h with new toy in pocket!!

There are numerous Hammering Man sculptures of different sizes all over the world, including New York, Los Angeles, Germany and Japan. Seattle's is 48 feet high and weighs 26,000 pounds.

Each Hammering Man is marked with a unique number. Seattle's is #3277164.

The Hammering Man's arm 'hammers' silently and smoothly four times per minute from 7 am to 10 pm every day.

It runs on a 3-hp electric motor set on an automatic timer.

Hammering Man rests its arm each evening and every year on Labor Day.

The Puerta de Europa towers are modern buildings in Madrid.

They were built in 1996 by the Kuwait Investments Office and designed by the American architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee.

Each building is 115 m tall with an inclination of 15º.

They are located near the Chamartín railway station - on the sides of the Plaza Castilla bus station.

'It was under the instigation of Reverend Father Courturier that the Dominicans of Lyon have charged Le Corbusier with the task of bringing into being at Eveux-sur-Arbresle near Lyon, the Convent of La Tourette, in the midst of nature, located in a small vale that opens out onto the forest.

The buildings contain a hundred sleeping rooms for teachers and students, study halls, a hall for work and one for recreation, a library and a refectory.

Finally the circulation connects all the parts, in particular those which appear in a new form (the achievement of the traditional cloister form is rendered impossible here by the slope of the terrain).'

The Paulistano Athletic Club in São Paulo, Brazil, designed by 2006 Winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Brazilian Paulo Mendes da Rocha. A leading brazilian modernist for nearly half a century.

The Paulistano Athletic Club is a sports arena made of reinforced concrete. The metal roof is suspended from steel cables. The arena sits in the center of a rectangular esplanade with banquet rooms and a garden. The Paulistano Athletic Club is large enough for 2,000 spectators.

Bodegas Ysios Winery, Santiago Calatrava, 3D Model

The building is conceived as an element completely integrated in the surrounding landscape and, at the same time, as an autonomous site-specific sculpture.

The Bodegas and Bebidas group wanted a building that would be an icon for its prestigeous new wine "la Rioja Alavesa" and at the same time accomodate the precise and rigorous program of spaces needed to make, store and sell wine.

The site is uneven, with pronounced grade changes of as much as 10 meters from the highest levels in the north, to the lowest in the south. About half of the site is occupied by vineyards. From: arcspace.com

Brasilia, one of the newest cities in the world was designed, constructed and inaugurated in central Brazil with one specific purpose: Being the capital of the country. Fifty years ago, the men behind this huge project had one dream in common. Building the city of the future. A city for people, with generous open spaces everywhere, where men could see the horizon, feel the breeze, be part of that environment, and at the same time would be surrounded by modern and functional buildings, designed for turning everyday life and activities into something rational and conveniently agreeable.

Planned for a maximum population of 500,000 there would be no traffic jams and no traffic lights. Brasília was built to be, not only a showcase of Brazilian architectural art, but also a city for the people. But then… it started growing up much more rapidly than anyone could expect. Today there are almost two million people living here, and yes, a lot of traffic lights and traffic jams. Even so, you can’t say the initial idea didn’t succeed. As an architectural experience, or a dream of a futuristic city, this place, head of the Brazilian government, is a unique one. Definitely Brasilia remains today as one of the most interesting places in the world, apart from any other.

Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany, 3D Model

The museum building was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and opened in 1968.

The "temple of light and glass" is the home of 20th century European painting and sculpture ranging from classic modern art to art of the 1960s.

The collection includes works by Munch, Kirchner, Picasso, Klee, Feininger, Dix and Kokoschka. The building has almost 5,000 square metres of exhibition space and about 800 metres of wall space, a surprisingly large capacity concealed beneath the famous steel and glass construction.

The spacious glass hall at ground level and sections of the lower-ground floor are used for special exhibitions attracting 100,000 visitors each year. For those who enjoy sculptures there are a number of works immediately surrounding the gallery as well as in the western sculpture garden.

Visitors gain access to the garden on request. Here, a variety of important works ranging from figurative to abstract representation can be viewed in particularly pleasant and relaxed surroundings.

In Brazil, a bridge built on curves.

Alexandre Chan calls his design of the President Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge in Brasilia a product of research.

Chan was interviewed about the prize-winning bridge design.

Here are excerpts: Some of the criteria were objective, others subjective, the Rio de Janeiro architect said. Some decisions were basic, others sophisticated. Some ideas were "touchable," while others were "untouchable."

He considered dozens of issues, ranging from the geological profile of the region to the importance of architectural shapes in the city of about 2 million people. Chan considered the bridge's position with the Brasilian sunset and the principle of avoiding straight lines on the deck to offer a varying landscape view for drivers.

"The JK Bridge project was not an explosion of artistic enthusiasm but an answer to the conditions of a government contest organized by the Institute of Architects of Brazil," Chan told The Buffalo News.

"Adequate monumentality was an intention, but magnificence was somehow done by the synthesis of all those items," he said.

Palácio do Planalto is the seat of the Brazilian Government.

The name means "Palace of the Plateau".

Brasilia was built on the Central Brazilian Plateau, a large area which covers a few States in central Brazil. Often Brasilia is referred to as "o Planalto".

The main working office of the President of the Republic is in the Palácio do Planalto. The President and his family, however, do not live in this palace; the official residence of the President is the Palácio da Alvorada. Besides the President, a few high advisors also have offices in the Planalto, including the vice-President and the Chief of Staff (one of the most influential Ministers in Brazil); the other Ministries are laid along the Esplanada dos Ministérios.

The Palace is open to visitations on Sundays only, from 9:30 am to 1 pm. The tours last 20 minutes.

The website of the Presidency offers this virtual tour around the Palácio do Planalto. It is difficult to see the President. Only in special occasions does the President walk up or down the ramp in the front of the Palace. More often, he is escorted into the Palace through the back door.

Le Corbusier's planned utopia in central India. Here is the first building of a larger set. The Palace of Assembly is the first of these monumental buildings.

'One of the interesting points to call attention to is the adoption of a circular form for the hall which seems contrary to the development of good acoustics. The Assembly Hall is made in a hyperbolic shell with an average thickness of 15 cm, constant throughout its surface, resulting in a very low cost and a minimum of weight (here the principle of industrial cooling towers has been applied to the architectural intentions). This shell does not terminate in a horizontal but in an oblique section which shall receive a metallic framework (aluminum). This framework will become a veritable physical laboratory destined to ensure the interplay of natural lighting, artificial lighting, ventilation and acoustic-electronic mechanisms.'

The Cathedral, designed by Niemeyer, lies on the central axis, near the intersection with the Eixo Rodoviário and diagonally opposite the Law Courts.

This concrete-framed structure, hyperboloid in form and extraordinarily light in effect, seems with its glass roof to be reaching up, open, to heaven.

Leadenhall Tower Proposal, London, 3D Model

The tower’s distinctive tapering form – designed to protect views of St Paul’s Cathedral from Fleet Street - will make a dynamic addition to the City of London’s skyline.

The rectangular floor plates are unencumbered by internal columns and the building’s services are contained within a separate structural element to maximise net floor space.

The base of the tower will form a six-storey enclosed public space with shops, cafes and restaurants. via New London Architecture.

The Leadenhall Tower will be 224.5 metres high, the tallest building in the City by a long way, and has (perhaps a tad unfairly) been likened to a cheesegrater in appearance. Malaparte, the man and the house.
Often called the most beautiful house in the world, Casa Malaparte in Capri, Italy, is dramatically sited on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
It was home to Curzio Malaparte (1898-1957), the Italian writer who designed the building.

The Palm debvelopment Dubai, unlike anything you've ever seen. Reclaimed from the seabed this is the first of 3 PALM islands and a WORLD island.

The Palm, Jebel Ali will add a new twist to the Palm concept - Waterhomes built on stilts forming a 12km chain between the Fronds and the Crescent and spelling out a verse from an Arabic poem written by HH General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defense Minister.

This is mind blowing, apparently the first Palm sold out in three days with buyers such as David Beckham.

Ryugyong Hotel, 3D Model, Pyongyang, North Korea

Begun in 1987 to mark the occasion of the world youth games, and to this day unfinished (apparently for financial reasons), the Ryugyong Hotel is a pyramid 330 metres high (9th tallest bldg in world), 105 floors, 3000 rooms, $750 million (which is about 2% of North Korea's GDP).

It has a Y-shaped base and stands on a hill at the centre of Pyongyang. When operative, the building was to house the 105 floors of an international hotel, a rounded slab of services on the ground floor, and three sloping elevators along the pyramid’s oblique lateral walls, plus a series of rings to contain revolving restaurants at the apex.

Interesting fact: A rusty construction crane remains at the very top of the building and has remained there since 1992, permanently gracing the PyongYang skyline. Can you see it?

DOMUS magazine ran a controversial competition last year for the reuse of the tower.

Sky Tower, Auckland, NZ.

At 328 metres Sky Tower is the tallest tower in the Southern Hemisphere, offering breath-taking views for more than 80 kilometres in every direction.
Since its construction in 1996 it has become the best known Auckland landmark.
